This is the fourth in a series of articles that will introduce fans to the new members of the Vancouver Nighthawks before the MLU season begins on April 19 against the Dogfish in San Francisco.

Phan (628x360)

Playing History

Phan has played for six years, most recently for the University of British Columbia.

Player Most Admired / Role Model

“Mike Grant is the player who I admired when I started playing ultimate. His performance at the 2008 World Championships was exceptional and it really hooked me into playing ultimate and wanting to improve myself to become as good of a player as him.”

Most Influential Ultimate Coach

“Mark Leduc was my coach during high school and Marc Seraglia was my coach in university. Both of them are great coaches and have taught me a lot about ultimate – how to play good defense, how to have good timing on strikes and how to work with teammates on the field”

How many of your 2015 Nighthawks teammates have you played on a team with before?

“I played with Michael Yi and Evan Taylor in juniors and with Nick Lin and Sam Creed in university.”

Nadon (628x360)

Playing History

Nadon has played for nine years, most recently with Victoria Skysharks.

Player Most Admired / Role Model

“There is no one person that I modeled my game after. When I was first starting out in the sport, I was just out there to hang out with friends, but when I started to become more competitive, I loved watching anything that I could find on YouTube. I tried to take little pieces of many elite level players’ games and make them a part of my own.”

Most Influential Ultimate Coach

“The coach that had the most influence on me would have to be Danny Saunders. As he is someone who has played the game at the highest level and been such an integral part of Ultimate Canada, it is hard not to respect and admire his take on the game and how to play it.”

How many of your 2015 Nighthawks teammates have you played on a team with before?

“I have played with a few of the guys in different capacities throughout my ultimate career, including Any Siy and Dave Hochhalter on the Under-23 Open Team Canada; Alan Macfarlane, Nick Lin and Samson Hoy on Blackfish; Aaron Loach and Jordan Tessarolo with the University of Victoria; Nathan Lam with the Skysharks, plus Gyorgy Aponte, Ted Chu and William Vu on other teams – 11 in total.”

Chu (628x360)

Playing History

Chu has played for ten years, most recently with Blackfish.

Player Most Admired / Role Model

“Graham Landon. I remember playing against him in high school and he never gave up on a play and laid out for everything. (Actually, it was really annoying at the time.) He competed hard while being incredibly spirited. On Blackfish, I was privileged to play with him and saw first hand his tremendous work ethic to improve himself and his teammates. I try to model my work ethic after his.”

Most Influential Ultimate Coach

“My girlfriend, Mimi Pan. Although she has never coached me directly, we coach juniors together every year and our conversations about strategy and how to coach the game have been instrumental in the development of my leadership skills and how I play the game. She is often my harshest critic and constantly pushes and encourages me to strive to be better.”

How many of your 2015 Nighthawks teammates have you played on a team with before?

“I have played with nine 2015 Nighthawks before — Jon Hayduk, Gyorgy Aponte, Kevin Chan, Mike Yi, Taylor Nadon, Nick Lin, Sam Creed, Samson Hoy and William Vu.”
