This is the second in a series of articles that will introduce you to the new members of the Vancouver Nighthawks before the MLU season begins on April 19 against the Dogfish in San Francisco.

Chan (628x360)

Playing History

Chan has been playing for three years, most recently with Hugh McRoberts Secondary.

Player Most Admired / Role Model

“The player I looked up to the most was Nick Lance. The display of his large arsenal of throws and athleticism in his Callahan video is what opened my eyes to how intense ultimate frisbee actually is. It’s one of the reasons that drove me to continue playing ultimate after high school and pursue a high level of ultimate.”

Most Influential Ultimate Coach

“The ultimate coach that has had the most influence on me is Nicholas Lin (#17 on the Nighthawks). He coached me in my first and final year of high school at Hugh McRoberts Secondary. I look up to him as both a role model and someone I strive to beat.”

How many of your 2015 Nighthawks teammates have you played on a team with before?

“I’ve played two seasons on Refinery with Mike Yi, and one season on Blackfish with Gyorgy Aponte and Ted Chu.”

Macfarlane (628x360)

Playing History

Macfarlane has played for 13 years, most recently with Blackfish.

Player Most Admired / Role Model

“Shane Vulatich was my mentor when I learned to play in Auckland. He always encouraged me to model my game on Tom Rogacki.”

Most Influential Ultimate Coach

“Peter Sisam is the coach that has had the most influence on me. He coached the Auckland team, Bluefish and Magon, and the New Zealand Open team on several occasions.”

How many of your 2015 Nighthawks teammates have you played on a team with before?

“I’ve played with eight of my new teammates on Blackfish or other single tournament teams.”

FitzGerald (628x360)

Playing History

FitzGerald has played for 15 years, most recently with Furious George.

Player Most Admired/ Role Model

“I have admired many players throughout the many years I’ve been playing. Early on coming up in Calgary I was coached by Invictus mainstays Elliot Negelev, Dustin Hong, Gian-Carlo Carra and Flo Captain Leah Bowen. Each brought unique and admirable skills to the game of ultimate but what they all taught, in their own ways, was the will to win. Whether finding the knife’s edge of spirited play, or hustle that literally pushes bodies past their breaking point, these four teachers showed me what it means to leave it all on the field and win or lose, leave with few regrets.”

“As a left-handed handler, it was really hard not to want to be Jeff Cruickshank.”

Most Influential Ultimate Coach

“See above. It’s impossible to separate any one from the others. If any of them taught me less about frisbee, they taught me more about life.”

How many of your 2015 Nighthawks teammates have you played on a team with before?

“I played with Loach, Butters, Bobo, Matty, and Morgan last summer with Furious at US Open and Worlds. Andy and I played together on the Moondoggies in 2010 and Rolo joined our Calgary Ghosts crew for Canadian Nationals in 2012. And over the years I’ve played a couple of tournaments with both Brendo and Kirk.”
